SASANIAN KINGS. Kavadh I, second reign, 499-531. Drachm (Silver, 30 mm, 4.16 g, 3 h), MA (Media), RY 31 = AD 519. Draped bust of Kavadh I to right, wearing a mural crown with a frontal crescent and a korymbos set on crescent; star to left and right; before head, ‘kwʾt ʾp̄zwn’ = ‘Kawād abzōn’ (‘Kavadh, increase’ in Pahlavi). Rev. Fire altar, flanked by two attendants; above altar, star and crescent; to left, date in Pahlavi; to right, MA (abbreviation for the name of the mint in Pahlavi). Göbl type III/1. SNS III/2, type Ic/1a. Beautifully toned and attractive. Areas of weakness and some doubling, otherwise, extremely fine.
